Who qualifies for Medicare

If an individual is receiving Social Security benefits when he/she turns 65, he/she will automatically be enrolled in Medicare.

However, a person may turn down Part B of Medicare. If a person has been receiving Medicare disability benefits for 24 months, he/she will automatically be enrolled in Medicare.

If a person turns 65 and plans to keep working and not sign up for Social Security at that time, he/she can sign up for Medicare only.

There are other rules associated with Medicare enrollment including penalties for not enrolling in Part B when a person is first eligible. Starting in 2007 the monthly cost for Part B is based on income.
